The 2/3's began their next unit yesterday, centered on Wassily Kandinsky. For this unit we will also be tying in the field trip that they will be taking to the Nutcracker! The 2/3's learned a brief history of Kandinsky and his methods, and discussed what abstract art is. I was very surprised and excited to hear that they all believed that abstract art was just as good, if not better in some cases, than naturalistic art! One student even recalled Jackson Pollock and asked if he was an abstract artist. After learning about Kandinsky's condition, synesthesia, that cause him to see sound, the 2/3's listened to the song that changed Kandinsky's life. Kandinksy was a lawyer, but attended a concert and was so moved, that he quit his law career and became an artist. For the rest of the class period the 2/3's practiced creating abstract art that showed their reactions to different genres of music. Then we did an art train where they walked around the room and looked at everyone's work. Next class, the 2/3's will be working on their final artworks that will be created by listening to only songs from the Nutcracker.
